Pre-hospital Care

Initial pre-hospital care, if an ambulance is called, is provided by the North West Ambulance Service or in some cases the North West Air Ambulance Service (Outside North West England services are provided by EMAS and WAS).

Children are assessed using a paramedic pathfinder to identify if they met the criteria for Major Trauma:

NWAS Pathway

If Children meet this criteria they are taken to the Children's Major Trauma Centre if they are within 60 minutes travel time and bypass their local hospital. If the child is beyond 60 minutes journey or have unsupportable breathing or catastrophic haemorrhage they are taken to their nearest trauma unit stabilised and then transferred to the Children's MTC
